Introduction
Wireless LANs (WLANs) offer a number of key advantages to
businesses. They can be installed relatively cheaply and easily
with little disruption to the building. Furthermore WLAN technology
can be installed relatively quickly - if fact installations
over multiple sites can be completed in a matter of days.
However, the most important aspect of WLAN technology is that
it enables companies and individuals to make a choice as to
the way they install and upgrade their communications networks,
while also giving them the scope to experiment with new and
more flexible ways of working (staff mobility, hot desking,
remote access and ease of management), resulting in much increased
staff productivity.
A recent Infonetics survey of 1,200 IT Directors in the UK
found that 42% plan to have a WLAN network in place by 2006.
'Whilst many technology sectors are struggling, the wireless
LAN industry is poised for double digit growth', according
to a recent Gartner research survey. The recent development
and improvement of technology, standards and security, together
with the reductions in hardware prices now make WLAN a very
attractive option.
The appeal of WLAN technology lies in the cost savings and
flexibility that come from eliminating fixed cable networks
and the benefits speak for themselves:
- simple and quick installation process
- reduced running and network administration costs
- increased employee mobility and productivity
- greater organisational flexibility
- downtime eliminated
- when office outgrown network can be taken with you
The aim of the forum
The Wireless LAN (WLAN) Forum aims to give senior IT, Network
and Telecommunication executives a thorough insight into the
strategic and business issues relating to WLAN implementation
and management, whilst at the same time providing a detailed
insight into the evolving standards for wireless networking
such as 801.11B (Wi-Fi), 801.11A/H and 802.11G. In addition
to assessing the different levels of security (Wep, WPA, SSID,
802.1X and VPNs) and measures that need to be in place. The
Wireless LAN (WLAN) Forum will also provide a platform for
networking with leading vendors of WLAN technology and solutions
at the accompanying exhibition.
Key issues to be discussed
What are the pros and cons versus existing networks?
What are the real business benefits of WLAN?
How to implement a framework for developing WLAN strategy
How to develop IT and operational capabilities for WLAN
What are the rewards of WLAN?
What are the risk factors in WLAN implementation?
What are the WLAN implementation options?
What are the security measures that need to be in place?
How effective are the different security measures?
How WLAN can dramatically improve the flexibility, productivity
and mobility of staff
How the increase in WLAN enabled mobile PCs and PDAs is driving
demand for 'hotspots' to support remote access to business
applications
The forum format
The Wireless LAN Forum will consist of a one-day conference
with a series of presentations from leading vendors, users
and industry experts together with a small exhibition where
delegates will have access to a range of supplier companies
during the refreshment and lunch breaks.

'Securing Transparent
Networks'
- Since the advent of the blended threat. (attacks
on multiple network vulnerabilities from a single
virus or worm) multiple points of protection have
become a must.
- Wireless 2.5/3G, PDAs and Smartphones are all technologies
that will allow users to access networks from no fixed
point, with almost all the capability of todays desktop
PC.
- The issues this raises are many, allowing a vulnerable
wireless device from a valid user to connect to your
"safe" network means you will be opening
your doors to these new threats.
- In order to benefit from this new way of working
- transparent networking security must be considered
in order to benefit without creating an open door
policy to malicious code.
