Introduction

Voice Over IP (VoIP) offers a flexible, cost-effective and secure alternative to expensive traditional leased lines, and are an especially effective and efficient means of communication for companies who have multiple sites, are adding additional branches, or for the scheduled replacement of existing networks. VoIP can also enable organisations to extend secure and cost-effective connectivity to teleworkers who can become part of the office LAN via a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

According to recent figures from industry analyst Synergy Research, the global market for Voice Over IP products was worth $849m (£542m) in 2002, and predicted it will grow by 50% a year to reach $4.4bn in 2006. The recent development and improvement of performance, functionality, standards, security and quality of service (QoS), now make Voice Over IP (VoIP) a very attractive option and the benefits speak for themselves:

  • reduced phone bills and operational costs
  • reduced network management overhead and more integrated systems
  • more intelligent call handling
  • increased employee mobility, flexibility and productivity
  • greater organisational and change flexibility
  • new ways to communicate with third parties

However, whilst Voice Over IP (VoIP) is currently on the minds of many IT executives, concerns about quality of service (QoS), immature standards, hardware/software costs, voice quality and security still abound, and executives who are looking to discover if they can achieve real return on their investments from Voice Over IP (VoIP), find it increasingly difficult to get unbiased and clear information. This one-day event plans to fill that need.

The aim of the forum

The Voice Over IP (VoIP) 2003 Forum aims to give senior IT, Network and Telecoms executives a thorough insight into the strategic and business issues relating to Voice Over IP (VoIP) implementation and management, whilst at the same time providing a platform for networking with leading vendors of Voice Over IP (VoIP) technology solutions and their peers at the accompanying exhibition.

Key issues to be discussed

What are the real business benefits of Voice Over IP?
What are the pros and cons versus existing voice networks?
How to implement a framework for developing a Voice Over IP strategy
How to develop IT and operational capabilities for Voice Over IP
What are the Voice Over IP implementation options? (Pure IP PBXs vs IP-enabled TDM PBX systems; unmanaged Services vs managed)
How standards such as Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Media Gateway Control Protocol (MCGP) have effected VoIP rollouts
What QoS (Quality of Service) and SLAs (Service Level Agreements) should be in place?
What steps to take to manage and secure your Voice Over IP network?
What are the rewards and risks in Voice Over IP implementation?

The forum format

The Voice Over IP (VoIP) 2003 Forum will consist of a one-day conference with a series of presentations from leading vendors, users and industry experts together with a small exhibition where delegates will have access to a range of supplier companies during the refreshment and lunch breaks.

Calculating the Payback on your VoIP Investment

Justifying return on investment for any VoIP/IP Telephony deployment is no longer an option. But it does remain a challenge. This session will help you understand how to calculate the payback period of your deployment whether you're migrating, replacing, or just considering an IP gateway. Of course, a key consideration in your VoIP/IP Telephony deployment is its ability to support productivity-enhancing applications. Accordingly, this session will detail the ROI calculations inherent in understanding the cost/benefit of IP-enabled applications such as:

  • teleworking
  • unified messaging
  • conferencing and collaboration
  • contact centers solutions
