Introduction
VoIP (Voice over IP) offers a flexible, cost-effective and
secure alternative to expensive traditional leased lines,
and are an especially effective and efficient means of communication
for companies who have multiple sites, are adding additional
branches, or for the scheduled replacement of existing networks.
VoIP can also enable organisations to extend secure and cost-effective
connectivity to teleworkers who can become part of the office
LAN via a Virtual Private Network (VPN). However, unlike
traditional telephone networks it can be integrated with
text and video based IP services, and can be offered in a
wide range of desktop, laptop and mobile devices and appliances.
According to industry analyst Juniper Research, the VoIP
market will contribute $32bn, or roughly 12 per cent, to
the total telephony market by 2009. IDC has said the market
in Europe has moved from "lots of hype and no action" to
a situation where VoIP is on the corporate agenda. In its
European WAN Manager Survey 2003, which surveyed 625 companies
in 10 European countries, 12 per cent of respondents reported
that they integrate their voice and data traffic now, with
33 per cent planning to do the same in the next two years.
Importantly, cost control was not as important to survey
respondents as in the 2002 survey. The availability of cheaper
bandwidth in local access connections - essentially faster
broadband roll-out and a reduction in the cost of leased
line - is one of the main reasons that companies have taken
an interest in VoIP.
The recent development and improvement of performance, functionality, standards, security and quality of service (QoS), now make VoIP a very attractive option and the benefits speak for themselves:
- reduced phone bills and operational costs
- reduced network management overhead and more integrated
systems
- more intelligent call handling
- increased employee mobility, flexibility and productivity
- greater organisational and change flexibility
- new ways to communicate with third parties
- multimodal communication including voice, text and video
However, whilst VoIP is currently on the minds of many IT
executives, concerns about implementation, quality of service
(QoS), immature standards, hardware/software costs, voice
quality and security still abound. IT executives who are
looking to discover if they can achieve real return on their
investments from VoIP, find it increasingly difficult to
get unbiased and clear information. This one-day event plans
to fill that need.
The aim of the forum
The VoIP 2004 Forum aims to give senior IT, ICT, Network
and Telecoms executives a thorough insight into the strategic
and business issues relating to VoIP implementation and management,
whilst at the same time providing a platform for networking
with leading vendors of VoIP Communications technology and
solutions at the accompanying exhibition.
Key issues to be discussed
What are the real business benefits of VoIP?
What are the pros and cons versus existing networks?
What are the key advantages of putting voice. video and data on one network?
How to implement a framework for developing a VoIP strategy
Full migration or specific workgroups?
How to develop IT and operational capabilities for VoIP
What are the VoIP implementation options? (Pure IP vs IP-enabled TDM PBXs vs IP Centrex systems; unmanaged services vs managed)
How standards such as Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Media Gateway Control Protocol (MCGP) have effected VoIP rollouts
What QoS (Quality of Service) and SLAs (Service Level Agreements) should be in place?
What steps to take to manage and secure your VoIP network?
What are the rewards and risks in VoIP implementation? What are the killer applications?
How are companies presently using VoIP technology?
The forum format
