Introduction
VoIP (Voice over IP) offers a flexible, cost-effective and secure alternative to expensive traditional leased lines, and are an especially effective and efficient means of communication for companies who have multiple sites, are adding additional branches, or for the scheduled replacement of existing networks. VoIP can also enable organisations to extend secure and cost-effective connectivity to teleworkers who can become part of the office LAN via a Virtual Private Network (VPN). However, unlike traditional telephone networks it can be integrated with text and video based IP services, and can be offered in a wide range of desktop, laptop and mobile devices and appliances.
According to industry analyst Juniper Research, the VoIP market will contribute $32bn, or roughly 12 per cent, to the total telephony market by 2009. The market in Europe has moved from "lots of hype and no action" to a situation where VoIP is on the corporate agenda.
The recent development and improvement of performance, functionality, standards, security and quality of service (QoS), now make VoIP a very attractive option and the benefits speak for themselves:
- reduced phone bills and operational costs
- reduced network management overhead and more integrated
systems
- more intelligent call handling
- increased employee mobility, flexibility and productivity
- greater organisational and change flexibility
- new ways to communicate with third parties
- multimodal communication including voice, text and video
However, whilst VoIP is currently on the minds of many IT executives, concerns about implementation, quality of service (QoS), immature standards, hardware/software costs, voice quality and security still abound. IT executives who are looking to discover if they can achieve real return on their investments from VoIP, find it increasingly difficult to get unbiased and clear information. This one-day event plans to fill that need.
The aim of the forum
The Enterprise VoIP 2006 Forum aims to give IT, Network and Telecoms decision makers from end user organisations a thorough insight into the strategic and business issues relating to VoIP implementation and management, whilst at the same time providing a platform for networking with leading vendors of VoIP technology and solutions at the accompanying exhibition.
Key issues to be discussed
What are the real business benefits of VoIP?
What are the pros and cons versus existing networks?
How to implement a framework for developing a VoIP strategy - full migration or specific workgroups?
How to develop IT and operational capabilities for VoIP.
What are the VoIP implementation options? (Pure IP vs IP-enabled PBXs vs IP Centrex systems; unmanaged services vs managed)
What QoS (Quality of Service) and SLAs (Service Level Agreements) should be in place?
How effective are quality of service (QoS) tools?
How will VoIP affect network traffic and the performance of existing applications?
What products are available for monitoring, controlling and accelerating application performance?
How have standards such as Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and H.323 affected VoIP rollouts?
What steps to take to manage and secure your VoIP network?
What are the rewards and risks in VoIP implementation? What are the killer applications?
How are companies presently using VoIP technology?
What are the other opportunities that a VoIP deployment can give? (video-conferencing, unified messaging, SMS, online collaboration services and contact centre flexibility)
Voice over wireless LAN (VoWLAN): Ready or not? Current status: what's out there, and what's coming soon, and why it's important
The forum format

The impact of Unified Communications on your Organisation and your People
Synopsis: The convergence of voice, video and data has been underway in many organisations for a number of years now. Measurable financial savings are being realised, from lower call charges and reduced maintenance costs. Yet it is only now that the most significant benefits of convergence are starting to be delivered. Increased productivity (through "anytime, any place, anywhere" communications) and better decision-making (enabled by improved workforce collaboration) are two major paybacks from the investment in new technology. This presenter will offer insight into how these benefits may be applied within your organisation.
Alison Brewer, Solutions Marketing Manager, Mitel

How secure is VoIP? What steps to take to secure your VoIP network
The ideal VoIP security solution provides preemptive protection from all types of Internet threats, protecting not only the underlying critical infrastructure that supports VoIP devices but also the VoIP protocols themselves. Such protection offers:
- VoIP auditing and protection with robust parsing of key VoIP protocols
- Protection from remote attacks, such as buffer overflows, and vulnerabilities in the underlying operating systems, such as Windows, UNIX and Linux
- Network-layer protection from distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, worm propagation and other attacks which exhaust network bandwidth
- VoIP bandwidth protection
